Driver and operator training cuts cost and improves efficiency along with preventing accidents, deaths, injuries and abuse, or misuse of equipment. Costs are contained by proper use and increased efficiency is attained by knowing what the vehicle does when operated properly. Proper use of any vehicle, machine, or accessory increases life cycle of the vehicle and keeps production at peak levels. Accidents and incidents add costs that can't be recovered. Deaths, injuries, and damage to equipment and projects cannot be made up or factored into operations. Accidents, deaths and injuries can also bring inspections and scrutiny from government agencies and the legal system. These costs are astronomical and damaging to the companies integrity and reputation. Most accidents and incidents are totally preventable by the driver, operator, or supervisor. If the operator could have done one thing reasonable to prevent the accident or incident then the accident was preventable. Training is the key to driver and operator safety along with guidance and accountability. Training must be specific for the vehicle, equipment, or accessory operated. Experienced drivers and operators also need specific training to keep up with new equipment, proper safety and operational procedures. Many times they have learned or acquired bad habits from others. Experienced drivers and operators may know everything and are the hardest to train or change habits. Past practice is not always the best. Manufacturer and trade association handbooks,"CDL" manuals, DOT regulations, and insurance company guidelines all offer proper procedures and standards for specfic vehicles. Annual training updates and refreshers can drive home problems specific to any history of accidents or incidents. Training and verification of training can make tremendous impact on any liability when accidents occur. Mandated training after an accident can be costly and disrupt the operation. Preventing accidents is a good business practice and pays huge dividends in keeping equipment and operations rolling, workers safe, and companies growing. Drivers and operators not trained properly may have accidents in performing their duties. Sometimes this is called experience and it costs money. Employee accountability for actions and accident history keeps any safety training objective. In emergency situations, properly trained people react without the thought process and don't panic. Continued and proper training overcomes bad habits. ©2003 Robert Reed
